I am reading a copy of Geez magazine when she steps onto the bus. I have seen her many times before but that doesn’t stop my heart from racing like a championship thoroughbred in a southern derby on a Sunday afternoon. Would this be the day I would find it in myself to speak to her or would she sit in the seat beside me and talk to me first?

US President George W Bush has implored Congress to reject a bill that would officially classify the murder of 1.5 million Armenian citizens during World War I as an of act genocide.

“Persuasive guessing has been at the core of leadership for so long–for all of human experience so far–that it is wholly unsurprising that most of the leaders of this planet, in spite of all the information that is suddenly ours, want the guessing to go on, because now it is their turn to guess and be listened to”

“Too often some in the hemisphere are led to believe that their only choices are to return to the syndrome of economic nationalism, political authoritarianism and class warfare to become, quote, just like the United States.”

There used to be a time not too long ago when a man could walk the four corners of the earth with a Canadian flag sewed onto his backpack and he was treated like a visiting dignitary. There used to be a time when a man could travel without fear to far and distant lands and when he grew weary, the locals would wipe his brow and give him a place to rest based solely on the fact that he was a Canadian citizen. There was a time when the red maple leaf symbolized truth, compassion and justice but just as fast as Paul Coffey used to race down the ice, the ill fated mission in Afghanistan has put a massive stain on our reputation throughout the free world.

I have seen images on the television screen that have made my stomach squirm. I have watched some documentaries that have made me swear to put down the pen and take up the sword. I have seen the plight of the undesirables and the malcontents begging for acceptance on the street corner in front of the disinterested masses who only yearn for silver and gold. Nothing was as vile, savage and sickening as what I saw on the television screen in the wee hours of the morning last year.

Ever since that glorious day I came out of my mother’s womb, I have been taught, told and trained by a powerful man who holds dominion over all other things on this planet. He has taught me who to love and who to loathe, what to lust and what to behold. He claims that the Lord is the conductor of his empirical symphony and that manifest destiny is the beat that the world dances to.
Hello Mr. Cab Driver

“I smell burnt toast and am having problems breathing,” I wheezed. “I need to go to the hospital right away.”
“I will call the cab company,” my fiancée yelped.
“You can’t drive me to the hospital? Is Days of our Lives on or something?” I gasped.
“No dear, chances are that the cab driver will be a doctor and he can fix you right up and the wait time will be drastically shorter than the hospital!”

Most fifteen year old Canadian boys have likely just completed their first year of high school. Some were probably anxious about being good enough to get selected to the various athletic teams that the school had to offer. Some no doubt were worried about being “cool” and worked the proper social channels to be accepted by their peers. Most were likely enamoured with getting the attention of the pretty girls in their grade. Some probably harboured inner fears of getting picked on or bullied by other boys. One particular fifteen year Canadian old boy did not get to look back on his first year of high school and smile at his successes and frown upon his failures. He did not get to enjoy the camaraderie of his team-mates on a sports team or enjoy the exhilaration of his first high school dance. This particular boy had to worry about interrogators, torture and death.
