Analysts pounce on Obama-Biden worldview

Matthew Brett, Thursday, August 28th, 2008, No Comments »

View the video below for a critical discussion on Obama’s foreign policy with some formidable academics. The Real News Network’s election coverage is wide-ranging at the moment, so it will be critical to focus on more nuanced issues as coverage progresses. Hats off to some excellent in-studio interviews. The network gets better everyday.

CBC coverage of U.S. elections? Jokes about war?

Matthew Brett, Thursday, August 28th, 2008, 14 Comments »

(Commentary by Madeline Bruce.) I watched the CBC Show This Hour has 22 Minutes last night. There was a skit about the American Presidential Election. Why? Like we are not already inundated with coverage of this from dawn to dusk? Do Americans bother to cover the political situation in Canada? Or know, or care enough to make jokes about it? Also there was a supposedly funny (?) skit about Canadian Military Helicoptors. War is not funny. I resent the CBC using our airwaves to talk about the USA, and to make jokes about waging war.

This is part of a talk I gave to a handful of socialist activists at the University of Winnipeg last year. I owe much of the research to Gavin Fridell and Ian Angus.

Daily Kos founder’s book hits stands

Matthew Brett, Thursday, August 21st, 2008, No Comments »

(Report from Narco News. By Al Giordano. Aug 19). The release date for Taking on the System: Rules for Radical Change in a Digital Era, by Markos Moulitsas Zúniga (2008, Celebra) was moved up from early September to tomorrow, August 20 – in the nick of time for the Democratic National Convention to be held next week in Denver. Howard Dean would do well to put a copy of that book on every delegate and candidate’s convention seat, as it is a roadmap for how to organize – on and off the Internet – to win political battles.

Tariq Ali:Pakistan After Musharraf

Matthew Brett, Wednesday, August 20th, 2008, No Comments »

(Counterpunch, Aug. 18. By Tariq Ali) Pakistan’s military dictators never go quietly. Field-Marshal Ayub was removed by a three-month long popular insurrection in March 1969. General Yahya Khan destroyed Pakistan before he departed in 1972. General Zia-ul-Haq (the worst of the lot) was blown up in his military plane together with the US Ambassador in 1988. And now General Musharraf is digging his heels. There is a temporary stalemate in Pakistan. The Army is in favour of him going quietly, but is against impeachment. Washington is prepared for him to go, but quietly. And last Friday the chief of Saudi intelligence agency, Prince Muqrin bin Abdul Aziz, had secretly arrived in Pakistan and held talks with coalition leaders and President Musharraf. He wants a ’safe exit’ for the president. Sanctuaries in Manhattan, Texas and the Turkish island of Bueyuekada (Prinkipo) are being actively considered. The General would prefer a large estate in Pakistan, preferably near a golf course, but security considerations alone would make that infeasible.

Afghan officials clamp down on the press

Matthew Brett, Wednesday, August 20th, 2008, No Comments »

(Christian Sciene Monitor.By Anand Gopal. Aug 19) Naseer Fayaz, one of Afghanistan’s most famous television presenters, is used to fans and other well-wishers coming by the office. The host of a popular weekly program, “The Truth,” his exposés of government malfeasance have won him awards as well as a devoted following. But after a recent episode of the show that was especially critical of the government, Mr. Fayaz received unexpected visitors: members of the Afghan secret police.

David Harvey: The state of the empire

Matthew Brett, Wednesday, August 20th, 2008, No Comments »

(Courtesy The Real News.) In the first part of his interview with Pepe Escobar, David Harvey talks about competing capitalist blocks, the US-China relationship, the neoconservative global project and Barack Obama as the new face of US neoliberalism. It’s an interview largely without content, but does provide some key reminders of US-China interdependency.
