McCain, “Mexican-Americans” and the Vietnam War

Canadian Dimension, Saturday, June 28th, 2008, No Comments »

(By Arnold August, June 28, 2008) On Saturday, June 28, Republican candidate for the US presidency John McCain addressed the National Association of Latino Officials in Washington, D.C. He said, amongst others things that “Mexican-Americans” and other “Latino-Americans” contributed greatly to the US war effort in Vietnam. He related how he met and knew many of them in Vietnam, some of whom were killed in action and/or imprisoned with McCain.

Canadians’ tall tale

Canadian Dimension, Saturday, June 28th, 2008, No Comments »

(By Ian Sinclair, Morning Star) Every nation tells itself stories to make itself feel better. Canadians seem to be better at this than most, tending to define themselves in opposition to their more powerful southern neighbour.

Where’s the Canadian content?

Canadian Dimension, Saturday, June 28th, 2008, No Comments »

(From Madeline Bruce) I tuned into the CBC program The hour tonight, and what do I find? They are interviewing American actor Alan Alda about his new book. I want to see Canadian talent given a chance. There is no excuse for using the Canadian media for highly paid American actors to plug their books, while Canadian talent goes hungry and unknown. It’s starting to feel like the Canadian identity is being watered down and ignored, all the better to shove the so called Security and Prosperity Partnership down our throats, once it’s all written up and signed, with zero input from Canadian citizens. Canada - wake up!

State Complicity in Ecological Destruction

Chris Webb, Friday, June 27th, 2008, No Comments »

The neo-liberal argument that our economy is a market place utopia, where the invisible hand will dish out wealth to those deserving of it and pull the rest from poverty has repeatedly been exposed for the lie that it is. But what many fail to recognize in the world of corporate capitalism, is the role of the state in encouraging this cycle of accumulation and ecological destruction.

Chomsky: The Public is Now Irrelevant

Canadian journalist, filmmaker and activist Avi Lewis talks to world-renowned linguist and US foreign policy critic Noam Chomsky for Al Jazeera’s English station. Their discussion revolves around the upcoming US elections, the possibility of ‘change’ in the US electoral system and the realities of hegemonic power and imperialism in deciding US domestic and foreign policy.

Pleasure fishing on the rise despite StatsCan census

Canadian Dimension, Thursday, June 26th, 2008, No Comments »

StatsCan released data today indicating less and less Canadians fish for pleasure. The figures may be slightly off. Quebec Health Minister Philippe Couillard had his period of reflection by the stream before resigning, fishing is one of Bernier’s newfound hobbies, and the biggest catch goes to Julie Couillard, who has been fishing for pleasure for some time now. Had StatsCan taken these variables into account, pleasure fishing in Canada would be very much alive.

The Controllers: Canadian media follow lead on Afghanistan

Canadian Dimension, Thursday, June 26th, 2008, 2 Comments »

I receive the weekly police report and churn it into a headline or two every week. Bear with the jargon for a moment: “Crime stories are almost wholly produced from the definitions and perspectives of the institutional primary definers,” writes cultural theorist Stuart Hall. Much of the Canadian media’s reporting on Afghanistan follows the same model, and consequently, “what debate there is tends to take place almost exclusively within the terms of reference of the controllers,” in this case, NATO and the U.S.
