I attended a dialogue entitled “Canada and Israel - A Personal Perspective on the Ties that Bind” between Mr. Michael Ignatieff and Professor Aurel Braun from the U of T presented by the Holy Blossom Temple and Canadian Coalition for Democracies (CCD). This was my first time attending an event sponsored by any of these two organizations or focused and formatted entirely for an audience made up mainly of members of the Canadian Jewish community. I was really looking forward to learning from two reputed scholars and meeting and exchanging ideas with members of the community.

Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter met Nasser al-Shaer, a senior Hamas leader, and is scheduled to meet Khaled Mashaal, the exiled leader of Hamas, in Syria on Friday. Hamas are listed as a terrorist organization by Public Safety Canada. So are the Tamil Tigers, among many others. The recent building seizures of World Tamil Movement offices in Montreal and Toronto are part of a string of first-time measures being implemented under Canada’s Anti-Terrorism Act, which was pushed through Parliament shortly after 9/11. Parallels with the Patriot Act are strikingly similar, and the effects on freedom of expression and freedom of association are vast. A 2002 CISIS report had anti-globalization, Aboriginal and anti-abortion groups listed as potential terrorist groups. Will we arrest and seize their members and assets as well? While we’re at it, will we arrest Jimmy Carter for speaking with a “terrorist” group on his next visit to Canada?

This is not news, but it’s news to me. The two editors of the left magazine Dushu, which has a readership of 100,000, were sacked last July as part of a crackdown on left dissent.

“The revolution to be made in the United States,” Jimmy wrote, nearly 30 years before 9/11, “will be the first revolution in history to require the masses to make material sacrifices rather than to acquire more material things. We must give up many of the things which this country has enjoyed at the expense of damning over one third of the world into a state of underdevelopment, ignorance, disease and early death.” Until that takes place, “this country will not be safe for the world and revolutionary warfare on an international scale against the United States will remain the wave of the present.” Grace Lee Boggs’ talk at this year’s Left Forum.
