Craving the Ridiculous!

Janette Watt, May 7th, 2007

This is a confession.

I crave the ridiculous.

I do it often.

Sometimes I do it several times a day.

Sometimes I do it for hours on end.

Sometimes I do it for weeks on end.

I have done it for as long as I can remember.

I do it by choice.

Many in my circle of family and friends have tried to dissuade me. They have failed.

Some think I need curing of my craving. I refuse to be cured.

Ahhhh, the thought of it — the ridiculous!

I long for it.

I desire it.

I require it, I need it.

I search earnestly for it. I chase after it.

And if I needed to, I would beg for it.

The ridiculous. When I find it, I hold onto it. I turn it over and over looking for it’s magical properties. Looking for how to make it work. Looking for others who crave it. In my search, I look to the past, the present and the future.

Here is just some of the ridiculous that I have found and hold onto:

Peace is possible.

Violence is not inevitable.

There are solutions for global warming.

We can live in harmony with our environment.

No more animals, plants — or people — need become extinct, whether from disease, war or villainous greed.

A white protestant woman from the west and a brown muslim man from the east can be friends.

All humans are equally valuable, and should be treated royally.

Stolen lands will be returned.

There are ways to work together to ensure that we all have more than enough water and food.

We can marry whomever we choose, and it does not matter what colour our skin is, or whether
we are gay or straight.

Women can be doctors, lawyers, engineers, carpenters, police officers (etc.)… and get paid the same as men, and not experience harassment on the job.

People with “dis” (different) abilities will be in the Olympics, and we will work along side each other as equals.

The world is round.

People can fly.

  1. Awesome! Inspiring! A poetic statement of truths driving home the simple fact that we can attain these ridiculous cravings!

I’m off to make my own list of ridiculous cravings — which copy some of yours :)

  2. This is an interesting perspective on what constitutes “the ridiculous.”

The ridiculous is at times unpopular. But seeking to live in a socially cohesive, inclusive society is not about a popularity contest. Rather, it is to understand that we are all different in some way or another. But difference should not be attributed to negative connotations as it has been many times throughout history. Instead, we need to embrace “the ridiculous” in order to demonstrate our willingness to accept others.

We are all imperfect. But simply because we have follies does not give an excuse not to strive for being the best, wanting the best, and achieving the best possible results in the worst situations we face at any given time.

We all have a past, we’re all experiencing today, and we can look forward to tomorrow having learned some life lessons. Sometimes those lessons involve “the ridiculous” so that we can mature into a society of understanding. The purpose of “the ridiculous” is not simply to measure one’s intelligence, but to also acknowledge their willingness to exercise their values.

  3. It’s ridiculous that your craving cannot be satisfied.

How ridiculous that in this round world, people are too square, too boxed in, too obsessed with appearing rational that our society marches on in ridiculous alleyways leading to ridiculous conclusions.

You crave that which seems so obvious - peace, co-existence, security to build a small shack and grow a small patch of parsley and listen to birds, smell the sunrises and trust the well water.

Crave on, Janette. Crave so that others may become infected with the craving of that which is sublimely ridiculous.

  4. Dear Janette,

Your poem “Craving the Ridiculous!” was one of the best poems I’ve ever read.

Great writing, great thinking………thanks for sharing it :)

    Sincerely,
    Farnaz
